Oak and Iron Fitness

At Oak and Iron, we’re always excited to spotlight members who exemplify resilience, dedication, and positivity. This month, we’re thrilled to recognize Shelley Lockerman – a member who does just that and beyond. Shelley is a 6am allstar who never backs down from a challenge. After overcoming a spinal fusion , she embraced the fitness community at Oak and Iron, and has remained committed to staying active and bringing joy into every aspect of their life. She is also our first Member of the Month to cite DRIVE as her favorite class, and that feels important to recognize!

Describe yourself in 10 words or less.

I’m a witty, loving, curious human who loves to hug.

Using however many words you want 😉 – tell us a bit about yourself.

I am someone who loves to fight for what I want and is resilient all the way through the challenges. I am more vulnerable than most people may know and have to fight my own internal battles. My little family is my everything. Getting married, growing our family, growing our careers, it has been an uphill battle from the start. But the fight has made the rewards exponentially better. I constantly strive to be a better human and to bring joy into this world (though I am quick to sit down and spill the tea with close friends).  I love the life I have created. I love the challenges of the past, the joy of the present, and the excitement for the future.

How long have you been coming to Oak and Iron?

Since July 2022

How has your fitness journey evolved over time? From childhood to now.

I was a childhood athlete. Played all the sports until I found volleyball in 6th grade. 4 year varsity letterman, All State recognition and Junior Olympic player. In college, I played various intramural leagues. After college, I played on adult volleyball recreation leagues.  In 2010, I fell into Crossfit and stayed in it until a nasty injury led to a cervical spinal fusion that took me out in Sept 2021. While I was recovering from my fusion, Oak and Iron was coming into existence. I started following them on Instagram to see the workouts, the coaches, and the community. I couldn’t wait to be cleared to join.  In July 2022, I joined and never looked back.

Have you set any specific fitness goals that Oak and Iron has helped you achieve?

To stay active. That is all I want.

LIFT, DRIVE, or STEADY – what’s your favorite and why?

DRIVE. All day. Feels good to push my body hard.

The exercises you LOVE to see on the whiteboard… and the ones you DON’T LOVE to see…?

Love: Wall balls, Bike, Kettlebell Swings

Hate: Burpees, Mountain Climbers

How has the Oak and Iron community contributed to your overall experience? Have you made any fitness buddies or found workout partners here?

My 6am crew and the one and only Becca Mulvaney, my workout buddy. Getting up early most days of the week is a challenge, but surrounding myself with limitless positive energy is a wonderful way to start off the day. Having Becca there helps ensure I keep pushing myself and motiving her, because some mornings, you just don’t wanna. This group has helped me maintain my consistency.

What obstacles or challenges have you faced on your fitness journey, and how did you overcome them?

My spinal fusion has changed how I can work out.  I have been forced to listen to my body and my form is always more important than the amount of weight I move.

What keeps you motivated to stay consistent with your workouts? How do you maintain discipline, especially on days when motivation is low?

I enjoy it. The movements, the growth, the environment. But most importantly, I know showing up is the least I can do for myself.

If you were in charge of the playlist at Oak and Iron, what are a few songs we would hear?

Busta Rhymes – Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See, Busta Rhymes – Get It, Busta Rhymes – Touch It

Give a shoutout to a coach or classmate!

Becca and Coach Kayla for putting up with my nonsense 4 days a week

Who’s your biggest cheerleader?

My family. They never question my need to go to bed to rest or leaving on Saturday mornings to get my work out in

What makes you LOL?

It doesn’t take a lot. I love laughter. But a well played witty response is by far my favorite thing.

What’s the last book you read?

The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn, currently reading Saltblood by Francesca deTorres

TV Show or Movies or both?

Depends on the mood and time availability

Best advice you’ve ever received?

No one piece of advice; I learn from people everyday.  But the best advice I ever took was to go back to school and get my nursing degree.

What are you most proud of?

My family. In our early 20’s, we daydreamed of this beautiful life. It is amazing how this dream came true.

Do you have any secret talents?

I can make the water drop sound with my mouth.
