We’re excited to recognize the January 2025 Member of the Month – Michelle Yancey! Michelle’s dedication to both fitness and community truly embodies the spirit of Oak and Iron. Michelle has trained at O+I for over two years and she has accomplished things she “never thought possible,” like chin-ups – (we always knew she could do it.) Michelle Yancey - January 2025 Member of the Month

Describe yourself in 10 words or less

In slightly more than 10 words, I’m: Goal oriented. Confident. Creative. Introverted. Understanding. Globetrotter. Hardworking. Easygoing. Faith-filled. Tea lover.

How long have you been coming to Oak and Iron?

Just over 2 years

How has your fitness journey evolved over time? From childhood to now.

I’ve always been active. I was a dancer and competitive cheerleader until college. And really got into fitness in my 20s. Since then I haven’t looked back.

Have you set any specific fitness goals that Oak and Iron has helped you achieve?

I came to Oak and Iron to help with muscle growth. I needed great programming and an community that would encourage and challenge me. I’ve not only gained muscle but I’ve accomplished body movements that I never thought was possible – the chin up!

LIFT, DRIVE, or STEADY – what’s your favorite and why?

LIFT!! I love the feeling of being strong and LIFT is geared towards muscle growth.

The exercises you LOVE to see on the whiteboard… and the ones you DON’T LOVE to see…?

I love a good back squat or overhead shoulder press. What I don’t love….burpees. Which is why you likely won’t see me at a DRIVE class..lol

What obstacles or challenges have you faced on your fitness journey, and how did you overcome them?

My biggest obstacle was finding time to prioritize my health after having each kid. But when I realized the importance of my health as a parent, I re-prioritized my time. Consistency came when I found activities and a community that I enjoyed – enter Oak and Iron.

If you were in charge of the playlist at Oak and Iron, what are a few songs we would hear?

You’ll find a playlist sprinkled with 80s hits or tv/Broadway soundtracks.

What’s your favorite pre/post workout fuel?

Post workout I love a good smoothie with a piece of cinnamon bread toasted with PB.

Who’s your biggest cheerleader?

Larron and my kids – Olivia Joy and Leighton

What makes you LOL?

My kids. The saying “kids say the craziest things” is 100% true.

What’s the last book you read? Occupied by Waleed and Hannah Hamza (Raleigh local authors).

TV Show or Movies or both?

TV Shows. I love a good binge watch situation.

Best advice you’ve ever received?

Enjoy the journey.
