At Oak + Iron Fitness, our members are the core of who we are. The energy, commitment, and camaraderie they bring into the gym each day make Oak + Iron the special place that it is. That’s why we love celebrating our members through our “Member of the Month” series. These spotlights give us a chance to highlight the individuals who help shape our culture, inspire the people around them, and embody what Oak + Iron is all about.

This month, meet Braxton: Raleigh born & raised, 5am-er, and a great workout buddy to many! Join us in learning about his story, progress, and the unique impact he has on our gym culture.

Q&A: About Our Guest

Braxton’s story is one that many of us can connect with: a busy, hardworking parent trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Let’s see what Braxton has to share with us about his personal life!

What do you do for a living?
I work for a small startup that develops solutions in healthcare, animal nutrition, and education.

Where are you from originally, and how long have you lived in the area?
I’ve lived in Raleigh my whole life and have never left.

What’s something fun people might not know about you?
I’m married to my high school sweetheart, we have four kids, and I played basketball at NC State.

Q&A: Braxton’s Fitness Journey

Many of our members are relieved when they realize they don’t have to plan their workouts anymore. For busy parents and professionals like Braxton, removing that mental load makes fitness feel achievable.

Let’s dive into how Braxton’s journey at Oak + Iron has unfolded thus far.

How did you first hear about Oak + Iron Fitness?
Matt Bishop kept telling me about Oak + Iron and encouraged me to try it. I was in a bit of a lull and wanted to get back into lifting and strength training, so I finally checked it out.

What made you choose Oak + Iron as your gym?
I loved the structure, the programming, and being able to just show up without having to think about what workout to do. It felt like exactly what I needed.

How long have you been with us, and what keeps you coming back?
I’ve been with Oak + Iron since February 1, 2024. I keep coming back because of the results and how much it’s helped my physical and mental health.

What motivates you to stay consistent with your fitness?
I’ve been more steady since joining O+I, and that progress keeps me motivated. I want to stay consistent and keep moving in the right direction.

What personal wins or breakthroughs are you most proud of so far?
Getting stronger, feeling more confident with the lifts, and being consistent for the first time in a long time.

What goals are you working toward now?
Improving my nutrition, losing weight and body fat, and continuing to maintain and build strength.

Q&A: Favorite Parts of Oak + Iron Fitness

The environment at Oak + Iron is shaped by the people who walk through our doors each day. From the coaches who are always willing to go the extra mile to the athletes who show up beside you, it’s the blend of personalities, experiences, and shared goals that creates something special. Or let’s be honest, for many of us, it’s who has the best playlists!

We asked Braxton what aspects of the gym make the biggest difference for him.

What’s your favorite class or type of workout here?
Strength days for sure.

Which coach(es) have had a big impact on your journey? How so?
All the coaches have been great, but I’ve really appreciated Andrew and his guidance on the lifts and overall knowledge.

What do you love most about the O+I community?
The people, the accountability, and the supportive environment. It makes it easier to show up and stay consistent.

Q&A: Advice & Perspectives

One of the best parts of featuring a Member of the Month is capturing different perspectives and hearing directly from our clients what keeps them coming back.

Braxton’s perspective is especially valuable for anyone hesitant to begin strength training or unsure if group fitness is right for them.

What advice would you give to someone nervous about starting strength training?
Just start. You don’t have to know anything beforehand. The coaches walk you through everything, and you’ll progress faster than you expect.

How has being part of Oak + Iron impacted your life inside or outside the gym?
It’s helped me physically, mentally, and with my overall daily routine. I feel better, more balanced, and more energized across the board.

For many people, the hardest part of joining a gym or returning to fitness is taking that first step. Braxton’s reminder that you don’t need to be an expert to begin aligns perfectly with the Oak + Iron philosophy: we meet you where you are.

Braxton represents so much of what makes Oak + Iron special: dedication, humility, the willingness to show up even on hard days, and a genuine appreciation for the people he trains with at 5am. We’re grateful to have him as part of our community and can’t wait to see the goals he continues to crush.
