Oak and Iron Fitness

Try a Class

Nervous to come to your first class at Oak and Iron Fitness? We first want to recognize that trying something new can be scary, overwhelming, nerve-wracking, and intimidating. Maybe you’ve never been to a group fitness class before, maybe it’s been a long time since you’ve worked out. Or maybe you’re worried you won’t know what to do or won’t be able to keep up.

Whatever is making you nervous, we get it. We’ve all been there!

So, in today’s blog post, we’re giving you an inside peek at what you can expect from the beginning of class to the end. Our goal is to take away some of the unknowns so you can walk through the door feeling a little more comfortable and confident.

Before Class

If you’re like us, a conversation goes a long way. Let’s connect before you ever even sign up for a class so you can ask all your questions!

Send us a DM, give us a call at 919-418-4478, email us, or walk right into one of our two locations in Raleigh or Cary.

There’s no question that’s too small or silly to ask. Wondering which class is right for you? Not sure what to wear? Haven’t worked out in a while? We’re happy to talk you through every step of the way.

Once you’re ready, sign up for your first class using our Mindbody app. We offer classes throughout the week from 5am-6:30pm to fit your busy schedule.

For your first class, plan on showing up 5-10 minutes early so you have plenty of time to get settled, meet your coach, and get a quick tour of the gym. You can also use this time to stretch, roll out on the foam rollers, fill up your water bottle, and get familiar with the space.

And don’t overthink what you need to bring! Members often bring a water bottle, wear comfortable workout clothes, and wear flat, supportive shoes. You don’t need a fancy new workout outfit. Just come as you are!

During Class

Each class will begin with a 5-10 minute warm-up. The coach will demo the warm-up exercises for you to follow along. The warm-up is created based on what the planned workout is for that day to make sure your body is primed and ready to go.

If you don’t know a movement or aren’t sure what you’re supposed to be doing, don’t worry! Follow along with your coach or other members and ask questions whenever you need to. You’re not expected to know everything on your first day.

Now it’s time to partner up!

This might sound intimidating, but if you don’t know anyone, your coach will partner you with someone else. Often, our coaches are intentional in who they partner you with so you can feel comfortable! They’re usually people who have been coming to classes for a while, so they can help you as you move through the flow of class.

And remember, you’re not expected to walk in already knowing everyone. A lot of the people you see in class today were once the new person, too!

Next, your coach will demo the exercises for the class that are written up on the whiteboard. Don’t worry about memorizing anything! Your coach will walk around, answer questions, give feedback, and provide modifications if you need them.

On the note of modifications, there are ALWAYS different ways of doing exercises to meet you where you’re at.

Maybe you need to use a lighter weight. Maybe you’re working around an old injury. Maybe you’re newer to strength training and want to focus on learning the movement before increasing the intensity. That’s completely okay!

Your workout doesn’t need to look exactly like the person next to you. Our coaches are there to help you find the right version of each movement for your body and your current fitness level.

And if you need a break? Take one! Getting stronger isn’t about pushing yourself past your limits. It’s about learning how to challenge yourself in a way that feels appropriate for you.

Most importantly, you do not need to be “in shape” before you come to Oak + Iron. That’s what we’re here for!

After Class

You did it! Your first Oak and Iron Fitness class is officially in the books.

You’re always welcome to stay and stretch or foam roll before heading out for the rest of your day. Make sure to load up on a balanced meal and rehydrate.

And don’t worry if you don’t feel like you nailed every exercise or knew exactly what you were doing. Your first class (honestly, first few classes) is about getting familiar with the space, meeting your coach and fellow members, learning new movements, and just showing up.

The next time you walk through the doors, it won’t feel quite so new.

Still feeling a little nervous?

That’s okay. You don’t have to wait until you feel completely confident to get started.

Take it one step at a time. Send us a message. Ask your questions. Come take a tour. Or book your first class and let us take it from there.

You don’t have to know what you’re doing before you walk through the door. You just have to walk through it.

PRO TIP – if you read this blog and you’re still just not feeling ready for the group fitness vibe, consider booking a 1:1 personal training session with one of our coaches! This will allow you to get a lay of the land, but in a more personalized setting.
