Oak and Iron Fitness

As a local business, we’re passionate about supporting fellow local businesses and entrepreneurs. That’s why we created our Community Spotlight series: to introduce you to some of our favorite people making an impact in the Raleigh community!

This month, we’re featuring Dr. Cory Bailey, Chiropractor and Strength & Conditioning Specialist. If his name sounds familiar, you may have attended one of our BUILT TO MOVE Performance Mobility workshops, where Cory partnered with Oak and Iron Fitness owner, Matt Gulliver to lead five sessions earlier this year.

Meet Cory

Cory was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania but moved to Raleigh in 2022 with no plans to move back to the North as he shared it’s “too cold back home.”

Cory and his family love to travel, hike, and explore local coffee shops and donut shops (as you may or may not know, we’re all about balance here at Oak and Iron Fitness).

When we asked Cory why he decided to pursue a career in chiropractic care, his response was, “I knew that I wanted to work with my hands to help people move better.  Experiencing big injuries in high school and college and going through the recovery process sparked that interest. I was in pre-physical therapy school and never considered Chiropractic as a career path because I didn’t know what the scope of practice was. I was the only one student in grad school that had never been to a Chiropractor before going to school. Chiropractic really just fell into my lap through some CE courses I took, so I took the leap of faith that it would serve me.”

Cory also shared his favorite way to support his patients: “I am most passionate about teaching people how to move with intention. When I can teach a patient with low back pain while deadlifting how to deadlift without pain and see that light-bulb moment come on… That really brings me joy.”

About TriangleCRC

Cory practices at TriangleCRC, a family chiropractic clinic focused on helping patients stay active through every stage of life, including movement milestones and injury recovery to athletic performance. Cory shared, “We do that by integrating Chiropractic adjustments, manual therapies, traditional Chinese medicine, movement assessment, and functional fitness.  It is truly a holistic approach that covers the pain-to-performance spectrum of health and wellbeing.”

Cory noted that the differentiator of their work at TriangleCRC is, “teaching individuals how to help themselves outside of the office. That includes teaching stretches, exercises, lifestyle and health coaching tips, and supporting/holding them accountable along the way.”

At Oak and Iron Fitness, we believe fitness is about supporting the whole person. That’s why Cory’s philosophy resonates so well with ours. It goes beyond relieving pain and focuses on long-term movement, health, and overall well-being.

Chiropractic care is often surrounded by misconceptions, so we asked Cory to address one of the biggest myths he hears from patients.

“The most common misconception is that once you start Chiropractic care, you will need to keep going for the rest of your life. We truly care about teaching our patients how to help themselves, and when things get better, our patients typically choose to continue to come for ongoing support,” Cory explains.

The Marriage of Strength Training & Chiropractic Care

We asked Cory how strength training and chiropractic care complement one another, and here’s what he shared: “Chiropractic care opens a window of opportunity for patients to move well and pain-free. Strength Training is what takes advantage of that opportunity to build better movement patterns so that patients stay pain-free while getting stronger.”

If you’re dealing with pain despite exercising consistently, Cory encourages people to start by evaluating their breathing patterns. “Any adult that is experiencing pain will have a dysfunctional breathing pattern, and that breathing pattern is intimately connected to how they stabilize their spine/extremities. How that presents is unique to the person, and it takes more than just “fixing breathing” to get them better.”

For those of you who want to stay healthy and active for the rest of your life, Cory agrees that it’s important to stay consistent on the big pillars of health: “Exercise daily, be intentional about nutrition & hydration, sleep 7-8 hrs/night, and socialize with people that you vibe with and prioritize the same things. If this is the focus, you will surely live a long and healthy life.”
