William B. Umstead State Park
This massive state park is one of the best places in Raleigh to get outside. With miles of hiking and biking trails ranging from easy to challenging, it’s perfect for all fitness levels. The serene lakes, shaded picnic spots, and quiet wooded areas make it an ideal escape from the city.
Neuse River Greenway Trail
If you love long-distance biking or running, this paved trail is for you! Stretching along the Neuse River, it’s a scenic route that’s also part of the famous Mountains-to-Sea Trail, which runs across North Carolina from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks. Whether you want a short walk or a full-day bike ride, this greenway has you covered.
Lake Johnson Park
Located just minutes from downtown Raleigh, this park offers scenic lakeside trails perfect for walking or jogging. It’s also a great spot for water activities, with kayak and paddleboard rentals available. If you’re looking for an easy-to-access outdoor escape, this is it!

While the closest beach is about two hours away from Raleigh, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the water without making the drive.
Falls Lake State Recreation Area
This is one of the best places near Raleigh for a weekend getaway in nature. Whether you enjoy kayaking, fishing, swimming, or hiking, Falls Lake has something for everyone. Plus, if you’re into camping, there are several campgrounds with beautiful lake views.
Jordan Lake
